Homeward Bound

Cannot believe it's November 15th! yayeeee! Anyway we officially took a couple week vacation after our tour just to regroup. This past tour taught us a lot...we even wrote a list of "lessons learned" because we are HUGE DORKS. We won't share those until we have enough to publish a little book about it. One thing is for sure- do not listen to Simon and Garfunkel's "Homeward Bound" in the height of fall foliage in upstate New York while on tour. Your heart will break!

Other news: we are recording a 4 song EP that will be a joint release with our lovely label Kanine records and another label that we totally respect and love. SURPRISES IN STORE!

Also: we will be heading up to Philadelphia to work with mastermind Aaron DeBruin this weekend to shoot a video. Then we head up to Brooklyn for a sweeeeet show at Monster Island Basement this friday the 19th that looks a lil somethin like this:

NIGHT MANAGER www.myspace.com/night_manager
ETERNAL SUMMERS www.myspace.com/eternalsummers
THE BABIES www.myspace.com/thebabiesnyc
TOTAL SLACKER www.myspace.com/totalslackerband
THE BEETS www.myspace.com/thebeetsbeat

Here is a sweet video for a brand new song that is still untitled. This was at the Kanine Records Showcase during CMJ last month at the Cake Shop!!!

the other also amazing Neil

Speaking of Neil- we got asked to be part of a Neil Young compilation recently. Has anyone ever noticed how after listening to a bunch of Neil Young you are usually emotionally changed for the sadder afterwards? Heavy and beautiful stuff. Could make a person really depressed depending. I think we know which song we are gonna do but it's hush hush right now. If you have a good suggestion let us know!

Also we got our first review of Silver this week here: http://www.ifc.com/news/2010/08/eternal-summers-silver.php
Yeah I know...The Independent Film Channel? HAHAHAHAHA!

And a song that I wish we could do:

northside and such!

WE HAD SO MUCH FUN AT NORTHSIDE! Seriously it was a blast. One band I would highly recommend after seeing them live is Viernes, who just put out a record this past month on Kanine Records. They look like this:

Their live show is so tight, dynamic, dramatic, raw! You have to see them!!! We are getting so psyched about our friends Reading Rainbow and Woven Bones coming here this weekend. AGAIN if you don't have plans on Sunday from 3pm-.... you should come cook out/hang/see the bands do their thang. SEE YOU THERE!!!

FRIENDS AND FAMILY TREES!

We are so excited about this weekend! we will be playing two VA shows with some of our best friends in the world! First there is the aforementioned, with our great pals from Brooklyn, Family Trees who just put out a rad 7" on FatherDaughter Records that you should check out called "Dream Talkin." Also my high school bandmate has a sweet power pop band from DC called Greenland, and also the brilliant Andrew Cedermark. SWEET BILL.

ALSO on Saturday we will be having a music love fest with HOT LAVA, the Sad Cobras and Family Trees at Strange Matter (the old cafe 929/Nanci Raygun). Should be RIDICULOUS! and super bittersweet as it is HOT LAVA's last show with this lineup. tears of sorrow.

My name is Daniel.  I drum for Eternal Summers.  Here's my first blog:

There is a theme.

In the Winter of now I find myself contempt to burry my minds eye into the words of a nice book.  I'm reading nothing but books involving music as of now.  Here's  a few books i have read and reread this winter.

1. "Our Band Could Be Your Life"  by Michael Azerrad

Photobucket

I have read this book more than a few times and consider it one of the most influential books i have ever read.  It includes some of the best "punk" bands as well as some of the best "pop" bands, depending on your definitions.  It's all sounds. Black Flag, Minutemen, Husker Du, The Replacements, Sonic Youth, DInosaur Jr. and a bunch more are included in this book; fun and easy to read.

2. "PLease Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk". by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain.

Photobucket

I borrowed this from my brother a long time ago lost it, then bought it again for my birthday.  It's a pretty good book consisting of tons of interviews.  It does get a little too gossipy at times but is still a nice and informative view of Punk Rock music.  It's basically a ton of interviews taken from over a long period of time.  It includes interviews from Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Cheetah Chrome, Patti Smith and tons more.

3. "Come As You Are" by Michael Azerrad.

Photobucket

I am totally in a 90's heavy, noise, punk rock phase.  I grew up with this stuff but am seeing it differently in my upper 20's.  They were a continuation of punk music.

Michael Azerrad wrote this by interviewing Nirvana over a long period of time.  It was written before Kurt Cobain passed away.  However, the second edition was published with an epilogue. There's not a hyper vibe on Cobain being a legend which is nice.  It's basically a good band biography.  There's lots of pictures too!

Next on my list of books:

Eye Mind: The Saga of Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators, The Pioneers of Psychedelic Sound.

Black Postcards: A Rock and Roll Romance.

Any suggestions???

YIKES: a dream.

i had a pretty psychotic dream the other night. in it i was thirteen and at a summer camp near a canyon. 8 or so kids and i stood at the edge of a cliff, picking up small baby lambs by their front two arms. i remember that my lamb was especially chubby and cute. we dropped the lambs into the canyon. all the kids peered over the cliff to see the carnage. i couldn't bring myself to do it and stood far back from the edge.

chilly chili! and FRIENDS!

First of all, this past weekend was SICK! Not only did it snow blankets and blankets, but Rob and Sarah of the illustrious Reading Rainbow came down to our humble Mystic Fortress to record some of the most ridiculous songs EVER. it was epic and beautiful. you will be blown away once these recordings get out- but i will not be the one to ruin the surprise... go to their blog and check out the antics that ensued. www.rreadingrrainbow.blotspot.com

Secondly i made the best chili i have ever made in my life. It goes something like this:

2 lb ground beef
2 sweet red peppers diced
1 1/2 yellow onions diced
1 28 oz can whole tomatoes
1/2 jar of garlic spaghetti sauce
1 lb great northern beans
1 lb black, pinto, or what have you beans
4 cloves garlic minced

2 tbsp agave nectar
2 tbsp brown sugar
3 tbsp bbq sauce
6 tbsp jiffy corn muffin mix
1 chipotle pepper in adobo pureed
1 tsp of adobo
2 tbsp cumin
1/2 tsp allspice
salt to taste

brown beef in a big pot. add onions and peppers and sautee til soft. spoon of excess fat. add all other ingredients. simmer for 1-2 hours or until you are tired of watching it.

YUMMY!

squeeze me.

one of my favorite bands since i was about 9 years old has been Squeeze. three singers! the lead singer sometimes plays drums (see TOTP "Up the Junction") while singing. this is ridiculous!!! anyway i have found myself obsessed with this particular song, "Another Nail for my Heart," which i am POSITIVE is the reason why Elvis Costello wanted to produce their following LP. The corny bar scene and the lady in the tie are of particular note.

PS Eternal Summers EP is FINALLY coming out March 13th on Chimney Sweep Records. Hopefully we will have armfuls to sell on our way to Austin. YES!!!!!

a bazaar weekend

HAY! had a super fun weekend in charlottesville and here in roanoke hitting up the Bazaarsssss. Charlottesville was probably one of the nicest crowds we have had, so thanks guys. here is a short film by our good friend Jared Sosa, featuring Allison Apperson, both of the notorious Richmond band Hot Lava.

For the love of Jarvis Cocker

I sometimes wish i had been in my twenties during the early-mid 90s. Also that i had lived in England. Also that i had been the keyboard player of this band.

If you live in NYC you need to go to Death By Audio tonight and see the premiere performance of this band: http://www.myspace.com/familytrees

Days of Future Breakfasts

change that. Seasons is coming out Feb 22 so please keep waiting as you have done so well! it really seems like we aren't leaving Virginia until march when we head out for SXSW so for you Virginians think of this as a serious apology for last year. i know. i think we had 3 shows here in Roanoke the whole year. YIKES! but that is about to change and you may be SORRY for that. for any northerly friends do not worry. we will be heading up to you in april and of course through the summer as New York is such a happy place to be when wearing shorts!

on another front i am working on an article that incorporates recipes with super classic albums. right now i am working on a breakfast and dessert recipe for the Moody Blues' Days of Future Passed album which is probably the dorkiest thing i have ever done. it's gonna rule.

some updates about records

internet makes everything fast but confusing. some clarification. so we really don't have many records. for purchase right now there is the Summer Reading 7" split that you can buy at insound.com. BUT we will be dropping a 7" in the UK on January 25th (i think) called Seasons and purchase details will be at mealdealrecords.com. Seasons will be available for mp3 purchase on itunes as well. our original 8 song EP will be released hopefully in march with Chimney Sweep Records as a 10" and it will rule heavily in vinyl form. until then please be patient. we are DONE with our LP and are looking for a label to do what needs to be done. also don't forget you can still download for free our digital single at www.beko-dsl.com so do that too. enough self endorsement! here's a favorite of mine.
